On the edge of Moonglow

Post by UniversalBlue » Sun Dec 30, 2012 6:25 pm

The redheaded woman stood on the cliffs at the edge of the island of Moonglow and stared out at the stormy seas. She pulled the bandana off her head, shaking her hair slightly and letting it blow free in the wind. Her Amber eyes closed and she tilted her head back as the sea spray blew into her face. After a few moments she turned away from the sea and opened her eyes, looking out over the island itself. The trees were healthy and full of green leaves, the animals showed no sign of starvation or ill health, and the few field workers she could see were working in the fields without any overseer forcing their backs to bend. She began to walk lightly through the waving grasses, towards the only town on the island, her hair blowing into her face and eyes.

This land was a mirror of her birthplace. But there, Minax had blasted the trees, and it had been torn apart by war. In that place, deep within the ancient Compassion Desert, her family’s birthright was falling into ruin. Her leather clad fist clenched slightly as she remembered the inner-temple battles, and the far-reaching plans of its masters that had torn apart the Temple of Mondain until it became the lifeless ruin it was now.

She stepped through the gates of the town and felt very out of place, in spite of the warm welcome she had been given. This was the city of Mages, and those who were not mages were peaceful merchants going about their day to day lives. They didn’t wear leathers, walk with a wary gaze and have weapons hidden all over them like she did.

She was Silrien, daughter of Frederick of the Temple of Mondain, and now she had a home on Moonglow; yet it would be a long time before she felt comfortable with calling herself a Britannian.

Resting against the flanks of her great dragon, she shifted uncomfortably as a stray scale poked her in the shoulder blades. She contemplated.

Her mother, Sylph Thornlight once long ago had been the Mayor of Moonglow. During the sundering, when the world split and duplicated itself. Undead hordes had spilled out of the graveyards then while her mother had presided over a candlelight vigil for those lost in the sundering. They had beat back their foes then and Moonglow had risen to be a beacon of light to honesty and to all of Britannia. Glimmering magic streaked threw the air, crowds bustled seeking reagents from near and far.

Her mother had impressed upon her the need for constant stewardship of the city. Like many young women, she had been headstrong. Exulting in the magic, she sought the dragons to further refine her art. This is where she met the great beast that she had become such a close companion to - and was itching from its scales. She shifted uncomfortably again. Honesty. The pillar virtue upon which Moonglow was founded. Twisted by Blackthorn in the past.

She had decided to return and run for governor to honor her mother. She was shocked on her return. Moonglow isn't what it once was. Few travelers bought reagents now. The vendors, their market fallen from the advent of clever runes inscribed upon armor that precluded the need for their reagents, held only the minimum amount of wares on hand. Few people lived on the island now. Few were watching over the virtues.

She lost the race for governor. She watched the redhead who had appeared on the shore from another place. If she was going to be honest, as virtue would dictate, she was a little jealous as this crimson haired woman began to seek audience with the citizens of Moonglow. This woman, however, was working hard to make things better and Moonglow needed people like her.

Dusting herself off, she stood up and poked the great wyrm. "Come on you big lug. Let's go see if she'll let us give her a hand".
