Perfect Morning

Post by Severn » Tue Mar 29, 2011 11:02 pm

Severn put down her pen with a sigh, and rubbed tired eyes. Despite the late hour, she was feeling restless. As much as she wanted to find something useful to do, she had no desire to venture out into the nights storm. She closed her eyes listening to the rain, letting her mind wander, feeling rather lonely. Sure, she could find plenty to keep her company in Wolves Hollow, but no matter how many friends she had there, it wasn't any of them she was missing. She wondered, as she often did, where Malag was just then, and hoped he was safe.

Malag rode through the night the rain soaking into his leather armor, his robe clinging tightly over the soaked armor, his long white locks laying limply about his face. He knew the area well his dark elven eyes scanned about for tell tale signs of life. He patrolled Newcastle every evening his dark elven eyes giving him advantage in the darkness. With swift accuracy his arrow hit it’s target dropping the roving ogre to the ground. As he passed his keep he saw the soft glow of light coming from his office. Severn was home working late once again. He longed to join her. He longed to wrap himself around her warm body, to feel her next to him but duty demanded he continue his nightly patrol.

A loud clap of thunder startled her awake, sending her notes scattered to the floor. Kestal squawked at her from his perch, and she glanced at him amused as she began picking them up. “Was that Parrot for 'clean up your mess'?” He ignored her as he settled himself going back to sleep.

Putting her notes away, and making sure she left his office just as she had found it, Severn made her way to their bedroom, thankful that the rain had let up enough to make it there without getting soaked. The room itself felt cold and uninviting without him there. She had planed on actually getting some sleep, but once there she found herself pacing. Despite how tired she was, she couldn't seem to rid herself of the restless feeling, or her loneliness just then.

Severn frowned looking down at the rug she was pacing on, fairly certain Malag would not appreciate it if there was a path worn into it. Finally giving in, she made her way to bed, only to spend most of the night tossing and turning.

Malag felt the muscles of his horse tense as the thunder clapped and lightning struck near them. With a gentle pat he soothed the beast and urged her on as they continued their patrol. He was now far from his home but his mind still rested on his wife. He wondered if she was asleep yet or waiting for him to come home. Another clap of thunder and bright flash of lightning drove the image of her from his mind as he peered into the darkness for signs of his quarry. He’d seen a troll earlier and knew it was nearby. He tracked it’s path through the woods, his bow at the ready. He cursed the light as another flash of lightning forced him to close his eyes shielding them from the cursed light. Finding his prey he let fly another arrow dropping the hapless troll to the wet ground. He saw the light growing around him as the sun began to near the horizon. His patrol was ending. Smiling to himself he edged his mount on driving her towards home and his keep. He longed to see his wife there.

He opened the doors to the keep quietly and strode softly inside. He could hear her soft breath as he neared their bedchamber. He stopped at the top of the stair and stripped off his wet robe and armor hanging it to dry on the railing. He reached into his dresser and pulled out a dry towel. His mind returning to his sleeping wife. He remembered her words to him, “Tell me what you’re thinking. How do you see yourself?” She had asked him. How could he answer her. Could he ever tell her how he really felt? How he longed sometimes for the bloodlust of killing. How much he missed his former life. How he often felt like caged wolf longing to be set free and kill those who caged him. How many times he looked in the mirror and saw himself as a puppet of the humans. A twinge of pain brought him back from his thoughts. He looked at the scar now angry and starting to redden. He drew a deep breathe and tried to drive the thoughts from his mind. Somewhere deep inside him he wanted to see a return of a strong nation of his kin but he knew it was all a lie. The teachings driven into him from his birth of Lloth and the greatness of the nation of Drow. He knew this life was better and the gift given him by the Goddess Mystra was far greater than the past could ever have been. And it had brought him the greatest gift he could ever have, his wife. He slipped silently down the stairs and slid into the bed beside her, wrapping his arms about her and pulling her close. Such a life he had been given. He whispered to her, “I see myself as the luckiest of all the Ilythiiri Ussta ssinssrigg”. He kissed her softly and held her tight.

She woke briefly as Malag joined her. She had every intention of rolling over and telling him good morning. Instead she savored what she considered a 'perfect moment', and drifted off to sleep again, feeling safe and loved.
